Minimum Wage in Slovakia 2027: €972 a Month, Six Pay Levels and the Real Cost to an Employer
The statutory minimum wage in Slovakia is €972 a month and €5.586 an hour from 1 January 2027, up from €915 and €5.259 in 2026. The figure is final: the Ministry of Labour published it in the Collection of Laws as Notice No. 232/2026. For an employer the full monthly cost of one minimum-wage employee rises from €1,246.23 to €1,323.86 once contributions of 36.2% are added.
That is the headline. What catches foreign owners out is that Slovakia does not have one minimum wage but six, and most office and skilled jobs sit on a higher level than the one quoted in the news.
How was the 2027 figure set?
By formula, not by negotiation. Employers’ and employees’ representatives may agree a figure by 15 July; if they do not, the Economic and Social Council discusses it until 31 August. With no agreement — which is what happened this year — the Minimum Wage Act applies automatically: the monthly minimum is 60% of the average nominal wage two years earlier, rounded up to whole euros. The average wage for 2025 was €1,620, and 60% of that is €972.
The hourly minimum is 1/174 of the monthly figure, rounded to three decimals, for a 40-hour week. Where the established working week is shorter, the hourly rate rises proportionally: €5.766 for 38.75 hours and €5.958 for 37.5 hours.
Which of the six levels applies to your employees?
Under § 120 of the Labour Code, every employer whose pay is not governed by a collective agreement must assign each job a difficulty level from 1 to 6 and pay at least the minimum for that level. For a small foreign-owned s.r.o. this is the rule, not the exception.
| Level | Typical work | Monthly 2026 | Monthly 2027 | Hourly 2027 (40 h) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | auxiliary and manual tasks done to precise instructions | €915 | €972 | €5.586 |
| 2 | routine service or administrative work, jobs with responsibility for cash or stock | €1,031 | €1,088 | €6.253 |
| 3 | independent skilled work, a self-contained agenda | €1,147 | €1,204 | €6.920 |
| 4 | specialist work, running a larger agenda | €1,263 | €1,320 | €7.586 |
| 5 | complex specialist and system work | €1,379 | €1,436 | €8.253 |
| 6 | creative and conceptual work with top-level responsibility | €1,495 | €1,552 | €8.920 |
The amounts are those published in Notice No. 233/2026; the descriptions in the second column are our shorthand for the statutory characteristics in Annex 1 of the Labour Code, which is what an inspector reads.
Three points matter in practice:
- The level follows the hardest task the job requires, not the job title in the contract. A “shop assistant” who handles the till is level 2, not level 1.
- Every level goes up by the same €57. The entitlement is calculated as the current minimum wage minus the 2020 minimum (€580), plus €580 multiplied by a coefficient from 1.0 to 2.0. The gaps between levels are therefore frozen at €116.
- Supplements do not count. When checking whether pay reaches the level minimum, overtime pay and supplements for Saturday, Sunday, night and public-holiday work are left out (§ 120(2)). If basic pay falls short, the employer must pay a top-up.
What does it cost you? A three-person example
A Bratislava subsidiary of a German distributor employs a warehouse assistant (level 1), an order-processing clerk (level 2) and a senior accountant (level 4), all paid exactly at their level minimum. Employer contributions are 36.2% of gross pay: 25.2% social insurance and 11% health insurance. The 11% health rate is a temporary one that the law fixes for 2026 and 2027.
| Gross 2026 | Gross 2027 | Employer cost 2027 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warehouse assistant, level 1 | €915 | €972 | €1,323.86 |
| Order clerk, level 2 | €1,031 | €1,088 | €1,481.86 |
| Senior accountant, level 4 | €1,263 | €1,320 | €1,797.84 |
| Total per month | €3,209 | €3,380 | €4,603.56 |
Gross pay rises by €171 a month, the employer’s total cost by €232.90 a month — €2,794.82 over the year — before a single discretionary raise. The employees themselves have 14.4% deducted in contributions (9.4% social, 5% health) plus income tax.
What else moves with the minimum wage?
Several Labour Code supplements are a percentage of the hourly minimum wage, so they rise automatically:
| Supplement | Statutory minimum | Per hour in 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday work | 50% | €2.793 |
| Sunday work | 100% | €5.586 |
| Night work | 40% (50% for hazardous work) | ≈ €2.23 (≈ €2.79) |
Workers on agreements outside employment (dohody) are not sorted into levels but are entitled to at least the hourly minimum of €5.586. A managing director paid under a commercial-law contract for the office is outside the minimum wage altogether; we covered that set-up in the guide to the director of a Slovak s.r.o..
What to do before the January payroll
- List everyone within €57 of their level minimum. They need a contract amendment or a wage notice effective 1 January 2027.
- Re-check the level of each job against what the person actually does. Promotions in substance without a change on paper are the usual gap.
- Update part-time pay proportionally. The monthly minimum is reduced in line with the agreed hours.
- Budget the first payment for February. January wages, the first at the new rates, are paid in February along with the higher contributions.
