Slovak Sole Trader Contributions 2027: What a Živnosť Costs in Social and Health Insurance
A Slovak sole trader (živnostník, officially an SZČO) will pay at least €451.81 a month in compulsory contributions in 2027: €322.21 to the Social Insurance Agency and €129.60 in health insurance advances. That is €26.78 a month more than in 2026. Low earners pay a reduced social payment of €139.61, and a newly registered trader pays no social insurance at all for roughly the first half-year.
The figures apply from 1 January 2027 and follow from the law itself: minimum bases are a fixed share of the national average wage two years earlier, which was €1,620 for 2025.

Two systems, two logics
Foreign freelancers usually expect one “social security” bill. Slovakia sends two, to two different institutions, calculated in two different ways.
Social insurance goes to Sociálna poisťovňa and covers sickness, old-age pension, disability and a solidarity reserve fund — 33.15% in total. Unemployment insurance is not included; a sole trader can add it voluntarily. The base is not your current income. It is derived once a year from your last tax return and then stays fixed for twelve months.
Health insurance goes to one of three health insurers of your choice. The rate for the self-employed is 16%, set by a transitional provision for 2026 and 2027. What you pay monthly is only an advance; the insurer settles the real amount after the year ends and either bills you the difference or refunds it.
When does a new živnosť start paying?
This is where the Slovak system is kinder than its reputation — and where the two institutions differ most.
- Social insurance: compulsory cover begins on the first day of the sixth calendar month following the month in which you obtained your trade licence (§ 21(1) of the Social Insurance Act). Register in January 2027 and your first insured month is July 2027; register in March and it is September. Until you have a base calculated from a tax return, you pay on the reduced base — €139.61 a month.
- Health insurance: advances are due from the first month of business, at no less than €129.60. The minimum does not apply for periods when you are also an employee in Slovakia or insured by the state (for example as a student or a pensioner).
So a foreigner who opens a živnosť in January 2027 and has no other insurance status pays €129.60 a month until June, and €269.21 a month from July.
How the social insurance base is set after the first year
Each 1 July — or 1 October if you extended your filing deadline — Sociálna poisťovňa looks at the tax return for the previous year and sorts you into one of three bands. For the reassessment on 1 July 2027 the test is your gross business income for 2026, not profit:
| 2026 business income | Social insurance from 1 July 2027 |
|---|---|
| up to €2,983.37 | no compulsory insurance |
| €2,983.37 – €9,720 | reduced payment, €139.61 a month |
| above €9,720 | based on your tax base, at least €322.21 a month |
Above the upper threshold the monthly base is your tax base from business (before deducting the contributions you paid) divided by 1.486 and by 12. In practice, a tax base of up to about €17,333 keeps you on the minimum.
Worked example: a developer on flat-rate expenses
An IT contractor invoices €60,000 in 2026 and uses the 60% flat-rate expense allowance, which is capped at €20,000. Her tax base before contributions is €40,000.
- Assessment base: 40,000 ÷ 1.486 ÷ 12 = €2,243.16
- Social insurance from July 2027: 33.15% ≈ €744 a month
- Health insurance: 16% of the same annual base, settled yearly — roughly €359 a month on average
Her contributions run at about €1,100 a month. The €451.81 figure is a floor for small and early-stage businesses, not the typical cost for a well-paid contractor. We compare this against running the same income through a company in Slovakia for IT freelancers: živnosť vs s.r.o..
What changes in January and what waits until July
Only payers at the floor see a change on 1 January 2027:
- paying the €303.11 minimum → €322.21;
- paying the €131.34 reduced amount → €139.61;
- paying on a base above €972 → no change until the July reassessment.
Health advances at the minimum rise to €129.60 at the same time. If you pay by standing order, change it between the December payment (due 8 January) and the January one (due 8 February).
Points foreigners tend to miss
Insured elsewhere in the EU. If you remain subject to another member state’s social security system and hold an A1 certificate from it, EU coordination rules assign you to that country and Slovak contributions are not due on the same activity. Without an A1, Slovak institutions will treat a Slovak trade licence as insurable in Slovakia.
Employee and trader at once. Employment does not remove the social insurance duty on your trade income — the same income bands apply. It does remove the health insurance minimum: health insurance on the trade is then calculated from your actual result only, through the annual settlement.
Directors of an s.r.o. are not SZČO. Everything above concerns sole traders. A company director is insured on remuneration actually paid, under employee-style rules — see our guide to Slovak payroll contributions.
